Problem with Plastics - the costs of plastic production

The Problem With Plastics - the costs of plastic production

By Ray Gomez

Plastic production has increased because it is cheaper to make than other traditional resources like wood and metal. There are positives and negatives for manufacturing plastics. Plastic is used as water bottles, bags, chairs etc. However, it uses up our natural resources like crude oil. In this essay, I will explain how plastic is made and how much it costs to make it.
Image result for plastic
Crude oil is an essential for making plastic. Crude oil is a natural resources that is harvested using oil wells. To make plastic, crude oil goes into a process called refining where it separates the necessary things like propane, butane, methane, gasoline, kerosine, diesel, lubricating oil, tar, and asphalt from the unnecessary things. Interestingly, there are seven types of plastics. The common plastic we use is Polyethylene terephthalate or PET. These components are turned into pellets which can be melted and molded into bottles and plastic bags.

There are many costs involved in producing plastics. Significantly, a pound of new plastic pellets cost 80-85 cents while recycled plastic pellets cost 55-70 cents. The cost depends on the prices of oil and petroleum. Manufacturers prefer making new plastic pellets than recycling old plastic because they have to sort and clean them which can take time. As a result of all these new plastic, our efforts on trying to ban plastic bags is not making a very big impact. We should realise that what we have done so far is not enough.

Basically, plastic is easy to produce and convenient to use. As long as the price of crude oil doesn’t rise, plastic will be the cheapest material to use. Also, we still have an option to recycle plastic. Manufacturers should produce new plastic and recycle old ones so that old plastic doesn’t get dumped in our landfills.

Passion Projects : Planning our Event

Today, we are continuing on planning for our Passion projects. We have changed our target to student football tournament with the Year 7 and 8 because they're too many groups that are doing basketball. So far, we have emailed Mr.Hilliard for permission to use the gym. We’ve presented in front of the project group to explain what our project is about.

Our next step is to get an equipment list to have the right equipment for our tournament. We need this because we can’t play football without correct gear.

Passion Projects : Introduction

For the rest of the term, we are doing Passion Projects. The project I chose Is Community Sport and Recreation. We are trying to involve the community in doing sports. Our group is Lindley, Gian, Jhade, Roswell, Vince and I. Our interests are sports, mainly basketball. So far, we have put down our ideas into a brainstorm.

We also did a SWOT analysis. It is a table where we write down our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. We now have a plan but we need to develop it.

Geometry : Transformation level 5

Introduction
My fifth Achievement Objective is Apply trigonometric ratios and Pythagoras’ theorem in two dimensions. So far this was the hardest AO for me because I didn't know anything about it beforehand. I spent the last week learning SOHCAHTOA, and the Pythagoras' Theorem. In order to complete this, I have to apply Interpersonal Intelligence. One way of showing the interpersonal intelligence is to share or teach what I learned to someone.

Digital Learning Object
Here are videos of Caleb solving questions after I taught him SOHCAHTOA and Pythagoras' Theorem

Reflection
When I first looked at the rubric, this topic seemed to be the hardest but really, it's not. I learned what the opposite, hypotenuse and the adjacent of a triangle. By using SOHCAHTOA, you could find missing sides of a triangle. It was challenging to teach Caleb because I don't know if he understands me. After 2 periods, he learned it and answered the questions correctly. This benefited both of us, he now knows what Trigonometry and Pythagoras are and he helped me complete my fifth achievement objective.

What do the soldiers fire at in the bushes?
A rabbit.

What are some clues that the group is starting to think ‘more like soldiers’?
They think about their moves carefully and look at the consequences. They look at how their moves will affect them.

Do you think Homer’s plan will work? What problems do you think they might encounter?Yes, it might work. However, they could get caught and shot while going up to Heron or might not find any tanks.

What does Homer suggest they do when the group goes up to the Heron?Homer suggested blowing up the bridge.

What are his strategies to put his plan into action? He will use the cattle to distract the soldiers while getting away with the motorbikes. He was thinking about what he can use in the environment to overcome barriers.

Chapter 20:

Why is Ellie nervous about being paired with Fi?Because Fi wasn't used to doing outdoors practical things.

What is true courage according to Ellie?when you are scared but you will still do it.

Were her concerns about Fi realized?Yes.

What is a clue Fi's relationship with Homer is becoming serious? She says 'I love you' to him in the walkie-talkie.

What problems do Fi and Ellie encounter on their mission to bring the tanker to the appropriate place under the bridge? How do they deal with these problems?A group of soldiers patrolling the streets come by truck and Fi and Ellie are scared they will get caught but the soldiers don't notice the truck. Ellie tries to silently roll down a hill but the brakes don't work and the steering wheel locks itself and she nearly crashes into a fence. She turns the ignition back on and swerves away from the fence.

Geometry Topic : Position and Orientation Level 4

Introduction
Two weeks have past and I am on my fourth achievement objective. The topic I chose is to communicate and interpret locations and directions, using compass directions, distances, and grid references. I also have to use Verbal-LInguistic Intelligence. This activity was very similar to the last one I did. I had to learn about grit references, scales, and compass direction. I decided to print a Fortnite map and draw a grid over it. I also came up with questions to show my understanding of the language of direction and distance.

DLO

Reflection
I think this was a smart way to present my work. Although it was a map of a game, it can still be used to create a map because it has locations. I learned some things about position and orientation because I knew most of this stuff before I started. I am now moving onto Position and Orientation Level 5.

Tomorrow When The War Began : Chapter 17

Why does Ellie feel uncomfortable with Chris bringing cigarettes and alcohol into Hell?
Because he was bringing unnecessary stuff like cigarettes and alcohol.

What is meant by a “clean war”? Why are the invaders so intent on having a ‘clean war’?

They didn't want to hurt the people, they just want to take their land. They wanted to have a clean was so other countries don't get involved
What happened to the soldiers involved in the lawnmower incident, according to Robyn? How does this make Ellie feel?
2 died and 1 is injured

Why do you think prisoners are sent to clean up the houses around town?
To make the houses habitable again ( pg. 227 )

What does Kevin want to bring into Hell by way of livestock? Do you think his idea is a good one? Why/why not
he wanted to bring ferrets. I think this is a bad idea because the ferrets might kill the other animals that already live there.

Tomorrow When The War Began : Chapter 18

What does Ellie find primarily attractive about Lee? his mind, intelligence, and sensitive face

Who is she attracted to physically?Homer

What are the group’s options according to Homer?1. Stay put
2. Try to break family and others out of show grounds.
3. Help in any way they can

What do they decide to do and why?
Try to help safely

Tomorrow When The War Began : Chapter 16

What is the Hermit’s mother in law’s attitude toward him as seen in her letter?
She believes that the hermit was unjustly accused and didn't kill them.

What does this suggest about the way in which the Hermit’s family actually died?
He didn't kill them in Malice.

What makes Ellie change her mind about Lee on the way back from the Hermit’s hut?
She didn't want to end up like a coroner's report, emotionless.

Tomorrow When The War Began : Chapter 14

What reasons does Ellie give Lee for not wanting a relationship with him?
She was confused and she wasn't ready to have the conversation

What do you think are the real reasons?
She likes Homer and Lee so she cannot decide which one to settle on.

Geometry Topic : Position and Orientation L3

Introduction
I am working by myself to complete my third achievement objective. My achievement objective is to use a coordinate system or the language of direction and distance to specify locations and describe paths. I had to learn what directions are, grid references, scales, and distance. I overlayed a grid over the school map and made a treasure hunt. It says that I have left something at the gym, then the person who's doing it has to follow a set of direction to get to the gym. For example, the person needs to walk north 60m and then walk east 20m. These are some language of distance and direction

Digital Learning Object

Reflection
Making a map was the perfect way to show my understanding of grid references because you can tell where all the building are in the school using the grid. This map can help new students locate where the building is. I like working by myself because I can work on my own pace and don't have to worry about anyone. This was a very fun activity and I learned a lot about position and orientation like grids and directions.

GrowingNZ Project

Introduction

At the start of term 3, we have been tasked to research a topic about NZ. The topic we chose is about Irrigation. I was working with Danne and Aseem. We had to look at the problem, choose two enablers and create a solution. Irrigation is used to assist the growth of crops, usually at times when there is insufficient rainfall to optimize production. Water is moved through pipes, canals, sprinkles and other man-made things. Poor water application is caused by worn/wrong/damaged equipment, and poor position of the irrigators on the land can result in some areas being overwatered, and some being underwatered. Our challenge is to come up with a solution to make irrigation more efficient, to reduce water wastage and improve productivity. The enablers we used was 3D Printing and Networks and Sensors. We will 3d print the pipes that can open a small gap using a remote. Network and Sensors will help detect water leaks and broken pipes throughout the farm.

Digital Learning Object

Reflection

I enjoyed this topic because this was my first time presenting my work as a model. I think my group worked well because everyone was contributing to the presentation. I also learned about irrigation in New Zealand and how it worked. We had some days that my group was away so I had to work by myself.

Making Wind Karts : Forces and Motion

Today at Science, we are tasked to make a wind kart that will travel the furthest. This means that air will be able to make the kart move. The material we had is cardboard, string, and tape. The purpose of this activity is to learn about balance and unbalance forces. When forces of an object are balanced, it will be moving at a constant speed or not moving at all. However, if the forces are unbalanced, the object is either accelerating or decelerating.

Geometry Topic : Shapes Level 4

Introduction
My second achievement objective is to represent objects with drawings and models and apply Body-Kinesthetic Intelligence.

Digital Learning Object
For this, I have to learn what 2d and 3d shapes are. I also needed to learn how to use our bodies to form a shape. I learned that a person can use their hands to form basic 2d shapes. However, to form a 3d shape, you would need more people in your group.

I took photos of me representing shapes using my hands.

Square

Circle
Triangle
Rectangle

Reflection
it was hard to work by myself because I couldn't make all the 2d shapes with my hands. It was better if I worked with someone so I could've done more shapes. Using our hands to represent shapes was easy because our hands can bend in different ways to show the corners and sides of a shape.

Geometry Topic : Shapes Level 4

In maths, we have taken a new approach to learn about Geometry. The teacher gave us a rubric with  tasks we have to complete in five weeks. In some tasks, we have to apply multiple intelligence in our work.

My first Achievement Objective is to identify classes of two and three-dimensional shapes by their geometric properties.

For this, I had to learn about what corners, edges, and sides are. I learned that these form a shape like a square or a triangle. These are also called geometric properties

I shared my learning by making flashcards and applying Logical Intelligence into it. It had some questions that describe the shapes and prisms and you have to say what the shape/prisms were.

These are some photos,

Introduction to the Lathe

Today we have been introduced to using a lathe. A lathe is a machine used to turn down or face off a piece of material like steel or plastic. It can also drill a hole through it. The chuck holds your work at rotates it. There are handwheels that move the carriage sideways. The carriage holds the toolpost which holds your tool piece. Before you start the machine, make sure you are wearing safety glasses and the chuck is tight. Once it is running, never put your hand close to the chuck especially if it is running at a fast speed because this can cause injuries.

Tomorrow When The War Began : Chapter 10

Why does Homer insist on going on with the plan after Corrie’s house blows up? How does he convince Corrie that this is a good idea?
Homer said that they need to get Lee and Robyn back.

Describe the strategy Home and Ellie uses to ensure their safety when riding their bikes into town. What does this show about how they are starting to think?
Staying quiet and keeping to the edge. Homer is also at the front of Ellie.

Why do you think Mr. Clement is reluctant to help Lee and Robyn? How would you react in his position?
Mr. Clement doesn't want to end up like the people who " tried to be heroes".

How has Homer changed in Ellie’s eyes since the invasion?
Homer started to take charge of the group and make good decisions
What are the 2 different types of soldiers and how do they each treat the inhabitants of Wirrawee?
There were two types of soldiers: the professionals and the conscripts. The conscripts were badly trained, poorly equipped and treat people bad while the professionals were the opposite.

Why do you think Robyn had the strength to carry Lee?
She was desperate to save Lee

How have the group decided to rescue Lee, whose idea was this and why do they think it will work.
The group decided to split into two groups. Homer and Ellie will rescue Robyn and Lee while the rest will stay in the Ford. The group thought his idea would work because they have a low chance of getting caught.

What do you think happened to people who ‘tried to be heroes?’
I think they were caught and probably hurt or even killed.

Modal verb Practice - term 3 plan

This term, I have to study harder in order for me to finish my work at school. I also need to know where all the new classrooms are located in the new school building. For me to achieve this, I should visit the building at breaktimes. I could also help my dad with gardening. I might watch a couple of movies with my family and friends. I want it to be movies that are scary or action movies.

Game Development Post 2

Introduction

Towards the end of term 1, we were tasked to make a game/app. We have been researching our game. We looked at what we should put in it and all the designs we were going to have. When we returned from the holidays we have started building the game. Last week was the last week of making our game.

Digital Learning Object

You can find my game here

Reflection

My Learning

I have learned many things throughout this project. First of all, I learned how to code an app/game by the tutorials on the website. While I was making the app, I learned about other champions that I don't usually use. I also learned how to manage my team and tell them what to do in a nice way.

My Group

My group contributed some work. They didn't know how to code so I did most of the work. Some people weren't at school for most of the time so they couldn't catch up. While I was coding the app, they are recording information on a document that is shared among us. Overall, my team did not work very well.

My Work

Our work wasn't finished because not everyone contributed the same amount of work. Also, we cannot figure out how we can work on the same project with Applab ( like how Google Docs work ). Sometimes, we have a reliever and everyone just gets off task. I'm happy about what we produced this term for our project.

End of Term Reflection

In English, we have been asked to create a visual representation of our learning this term.

Friday, 29 June 2018

English Essay

In the scene, The Power of One, directed by John Avildsen, the scene where Jaapie Botha is bullying P.K in the school, these techniques were used to help the audience understand the main ideas that the scene is trying to show. The techniques are low-angle shots, close-up shots, and low key lighting.

To start with, in the scene after Jaapie Botha killed P.K’s chicken, we see the aspect of low angle shot. In this low angle shot, Botha stands straight with his arms up in the air. The director did this to show how Jaapie Botha has the power over the kids in the school and to show how tough and strong he is. This technique helps the audience understand how the Afrikaners treat the English people, hurting them or their loved ones. This scene can be compared to the scene where Jaapie and P.K were having a fist fight. Jaapie had the upper hand at the start but eventually lost at the end.

In addition, John Avildsen also uses close-up shots in some parts of the scene. For example, the director uses a close-up shot after Jaapie orders the students to hang P.K up. The purpose of this was to show P.K emotions after he pushed Jaapie. For instance, he was very angry over Jaapie after he killed the chicken but after that, you could tell that he is frightened because of the fierce look Jaapie gave him. This made the audience feel mixed emotions. One is that this made the audience feel excited because P.K was brave enough to push Jaapie or think that it was just a stupid idea for P.K to push Jaapie. I can relate to this because sometimes I make decisions that can lead to good things or bad things.

Lastly, John Avildsen uses low key lighting all throughout the scene. For instance, he uses this technique when Jaapie Botha gets a tattoo. Along with the music playing in the background, the purpose of this technique is to show that what’s happening around is frightful and unpleasant. This gave the audience thoughts or conclusions about what happens in an Afrikaner School. This is important because this technique helps the audience understand many things that the director is trying to show.
In conclusion, John Avildsen, the director of the Power of One used several techniques in the scene where Jaapie Botha bullies P.K in the school. These techniques include low angle shots, low key lighting and close up shots. These techniques impact the audience and show how people were treated during the Apartheid.

Writing SEXXY Paragraphs for Film Studies

In English, we are learning about the movie, The Power Of One. We use SEXXY Paragraphs to talk about a certain shot or scene in the movie.

S - The director uses a long shot of Sergeant Borman looking at Geel Piet.

E -  In the long shot, we see Sergeant Borman suspiciously watching Geel Piet with a baton in his hand.

X - The director intended to show Sergeant Borman's violent intentions towards Geel Piet

X - This made the audience feel afraid and worried for Geel Piet, as well as angry toward Sergeant Borman.

Y-  This shot can be linked to the scene where the bully, Sergeant Botha was going to shoot P.K. It showed the same feeling of tense and worry for him.

Metal Technology Project : Drill Gauge and F Shape

The very first project that we started is to make a drill gauge and an F- Shape. The purpose of this project is to learn how to use basic tools and to learn how to read a Vernier Calliper and Micrometer.
Instructions for the Drill Gauge
Instruction for the F - Shape

I started to work on my F- Shape. I needed to cut 120mm of bright mild steel and clean it using sandpaper. Once it's clean we smeared Engineer's Blue on the surface of the metal, let it dry and marked where we are going to cut. We split the metal so each half would have 60mm in length. We used a hacksaw to make the cuts we wanted. We filed the edges and polished it for the last time. We used the vernier caliper to see if it is the right size. This was the outcome.

As you can see, it doesn't fit perfectly. The length was exactly 60mm but the gap where the two f's are filed to the right size. What I would do next time is to check it more after a few files to see if I've filed too much.

Next, I started to work on my drill gauge. Same as last time, I cut 120mm of bright mild steel. I cleaned it and smeared Engineers blue on it. We marked where the holes were going to be. We drilled it and removed the bur using a burr remover. Next, we used the buffing machine to give it a shinier look. I could've had the chance to oil dip my drill gauge but I didn't have enough time.

Me using the buffing machine

The whole 12 weeks of doing these projects were fun. I learned lots of things that will help me later in the year. There are things that I would do differently next time but I am proud of myself for finishing this.

Safety around the drill:

When drilling, it is important that we know how to be safe to prevent injuries and accidents. First, you need to wear safety glasses. This prevents small bits of metal from hitting your eyes. The drill bit need

Is Technology a problem?

In Hornby High School, I think some students are addicted to their phones. This is a problem because they are using their phones in class and they learning is affected. In our last science test, around 40% of the students got a low score and they were the same people that got a low score last time because they don't listen in class discussions. Every time the teacher asks them a question, they would say "I don't know" or "I'm not sure". I think students shouldn't need to open their phones in class since we have enough time given to use it at breaks.

Term 1 Reflection What does the word 'reflection' mean?

Image result for looking back

What did I do well?

Term 1 was a very rough start for me. I was put in a class with no one that I really know. The first thing I needed to do is to cope with the new people in my class. Eventually, I did make new friends and still kept my old ones. I did well in all of my subjects, especially in Science and Maths.

What could I have done better?

Sometimes I get distracted from my work because I get tempted to join my friend's conversation. In some cases, I do get told off by my teachers but I try not to talk back or argue with them.

What will I do next?

Improving my focus and listening would be my next step. I also need to join more in class discussions because I feel shy speaking in front of other people.

Game Developmet Post 1

Introduction

Hello, this is Ray and this time in DTE, we have been assigned to make our own game or app. The decision is made by our team and we are allowed to make whatever we want as long as it is not inappropriate. Our team decided to make a game like geometry dash but we will put things that they don't have. The first phase is to research games that are like geometry dash and list all the good and bad things about it. We put all of our ideas in Padlet. After we've done our research, we grouped them into sections and put it in Coggle.

Digital Learning Object

Reflection

Using Padlet and Coggle was really helpful to get our ideas together because it has a share option and a chat box. It's very easy to use and customizable. I think they should add more options to the free account. Our team's teamwork wasn't the very best. We weren't putting enough information into our padlets but we did have ideas put down. There was not a lot of talking instead, we just write things down. I think we need improve our communication. We have now got an idea of what our game is going to be. We decide to make a game like geometry dash and mix things to it to make it unique. For our game to be successful, we need to work together on designing the game

THESE THINGS WILL HELP YOU PASS YOUR NEXT MATHS EXAM! (CHEAT CODES)

       Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

Introduction

Hi, I'm Ray and last week we have been studying about Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages. We were asked to make a digital learning object to show our understanding. We also went to pairs to work together. We hade the rest of the week to work on it. We did ours on Venngage.

Digital Learning Object

Reflection

I was working with Peteli and I think I made a bad choice. He get's distracted easily but he just needs help to finish his work. The hardest part of it was how we can shorten our information to fit it in our infographic. We solved this by deciding to just make an infographic per topic. We were supposed to used Screencastify but nobody wanted to talk in front of the microphone so we had to change our D.L.O, Overall, this was a great experience because its a new way to represent your work instead of drawing it on a poster. Venngage was also a great website because they have a live chat. I talked to them and asked for a good template and they replied fast

Haoura - Te Whare Tapa Wha

We started looking at Hauora at the 8th of March. I've learned that the model "Te Whare Tapa Wha" is the Maori version of the 4 sections of your health. The 4 sections are Taha Tinana, Taha Hinengaro, Taha Wairua, Taha Whanau. The teacher asked the class to go into groups of 4 and make our own model of the house. The model of the house must include all the four walls and the meaning of Haoura in general

In our groups, we were challenged if we can work together with someone we don't normally sit with. This made me very nervous because I don't know them much and what their strengths are so I just began making the house. As I move on forward, They started volunteering and it was good that everyone volunteered. I think next time, we should talk to each other more. Overall our work output was pretty good compared to others,
